Nathaniel Winter III
Long ago Nathaniel Winter III was born in the last moment of coldest season, grandson of the tribal leader. Nathaniel was raised to become a masterful storyteller, learning the many tales that had been passed down from his ancient ancestors. When Nathaniel's grandfather passed away he became the village's tribal leader. As the years passed, Nathaniel became renown with the traders who would land on the island for his masterfully told stories. That is when the strangers came to the island.
The strangers were from a collective that called themselves the Order of Eternal Recitation, and they were there to offer Nathaniel the opportunity for his tales to live on forever. Nathaniel didn't hesitate for the chance to carry his village's stories throughout eternity, however Nathaniel did not know what was to come next.
The ritual that would make Nathaniel immortal needed to kill him first, an important piece of information carefully omitted by the Order. When Nathaniel awoke he found himself pale and weak, and the village dogs barked at him incessantly. Nathaniel reached for the purifying water of his faith to help clear his head, only to find that it burned as it traveled down his throat. He was outraged at this betrayal by the Order.
Nathaniel attacked the representatives from the Order, and managed to kill one before he felt himself compelled by an unseen force to stay his hand. Approaching slowly, the Order woman who now controlled Nathaniel informed him of what he had become, a necropolitan.
As the years passed, Nathaniel's rage cooled to match his flesh as he accepted, and eventually relished in his new role. Now Nathaniel goes out into the world, helping to immortalize other storytellers. From time to time his passion flares up, reminding him of what he was like before the transformation nearly 300 years ago.

Hook
During his tenure with the Order of Eternal Recitation, Nathaniel has heard many stories, most filling in repeating patterns known as monomyths. One such monomyth is that of a doorway to the fantastic, guarded always by a single beast who has different forms based on the society reciting the story, but always having but a single eye.
Recently Nathaniel encountered an ancient collapsed cave on one of the islands he was visiting, where he found the crushed remains of a huge creature, whose skull contained but a single eye socket. Nearby, in a primitive shrine sat a key made of an unknown material with unknown writing. After gaining the permission of the Order, Nathaniel has decided to unravel the story behind the key, and thus traveled to the Great Fortress in hopes that the faithful of Dalt will be able to assist him.
