Summoned by Harrow Cards
Braecth: I've been a bit at ends ever since Lamm tried to kill me. Things are still… fuzzy. I lost a lot of myself. Things which used to be easy for me, became hard. My contacts… well, I can't rely on them now, can I? I can't stick my head out if I want to keep it, not now.
So when a Harrow Card with a note addressed to me shows up in Granny Hollit's shopping, I get worried. How could I not? But it wasn't a threat, and if it was a trap, well… that didn't make much sense. If they could get that close, they didn't need to play games.
So I went. I went as myself. But I still showed up early. As the other guests arrived, I did my best to see what they knew. I was a bit surprised to see Cloudeyes. She's changed, and not for the better, I think. Still, she's solid and reasonable. Mostly.
Dwyser and Hrrm round out the group. We're certainly not a group that would blend in anywhere, but we're mostly in or around Old Korvosa, and our paths have at least brushed up against each other in one way or another. Zalara arrives and gives us her mission: Lamm killed her son, and she wants us to put an end to him.
I'm in favor of this, but that's all the reason to be cautious. "Hi, I've shown up out of the blue, know things I shouldn't, and one of those things is exactly how you can get back at the man who destroyed you?" I pick at her story, and check out her background: I disguise myself as her, and walk back through her sources, like Thom Vinegar. It checks out, so we go for it.
Hrrm: Hrrm been in city Korvosa for few months. Hrrm, and Clank best friend Sample, see many sights together. Sample tells Hrrm of city history. Good stories, make Hrrm happy. Gold Market best place. Many friends, many trinkets. Sagitar Tiguan good friend. Sagitar likes old and strange things, and Hrrm has both! But other friends do not like Hrrm. Is Hrrm bad friend?
Maybe that why bad friends took Sample? Hrrm has searched city, with little luck, and no friends. Guards and other city friends no help, say they not know Sample? Very strange. Sample always with Hrrm. Could friends not see?
While visiting Temple of Many, Hrrm finds colorful Harrow card among shrine ruins. The Wanderer. With card is note telling of very bad friend, Gaedren Lamm, who has taken from friends. Maybe Lamm has Sample?
Temple also has Clank priest named Ouvan. Ouvan always watches Hrrm and Sample strangely. Even now, without Sample, Ouvan watches with suspicious eyes. Were we bad friends?
Following note, Hrrm meets new friends: Braecth and Ilmax, both smell of wet bark and dirt. Remind Hrrm of home. And a BIG friend, Dwsyer, Hrrm likes Dwsyer's weapons. And meets friend from letter; Zellara. Zellara say Hrrm is gentle soul. Hrrm feel happy.
Zellara tells friends of murdered son and Lamm. What if Sample is murdered? Hrrm must find Sample with new friends!
But first, new friends want to see Zellara's story true. Zellara say 'Thom Vinegar' is a friend that helped. Along the way, Braecth go away, but friend Zellara joins us? Zellara smell faintly of Braecth, and has trinket? (Odd, maybe they very good friends?) Thom is... okay friend, talks much, does not smell like vinegar.
Ilmax: While I was browsing the shelves at Jasper's for new-to-me books, one volume caught my eye as its spine sat closer to the edge of the shelf as everything else around it. As soon as I began to thumb through it, a Harrow card slipped from its pages and fluttered to the floor. The Inquistor. I picked it up and found a note written on the reverse side. Whoever wrote it alluded to my...disdain for Gaedren Lamm and promised a meeting of like-minded individuals that might be able to bring him to justice. And how could I turn down that offer?
Usual foot traffic on the rooftops outside the appointed place, a fortune-teller's parlor, luxuriously furnished, but not a dwelling place. Who's the first person I saw on entering? Braecth, the previously petty lord of his own criminal enterprise. I should have realized he'd be on the invite list, with an even bigger score to settle with Lamm than me. Maybe the drink is addling my brain, or maybe the mycelium network is working its own kind of magic, but I feel my philosophy is drifting closer and closer to Braecth's. He was joined by Hrrm, a collector of sorts, who seems a gentle soul. I gather Lamm stole something very precious from Hrrm. I worry that Hrrm's treasure may have been collateral damage, since I don't think he and Lamm would place the same value on just about anything in this world. We were then joined by Dwyser, the gravedigger. Dwyser and I have crossed paths many times in the past, dead bodies being both our businesses. His faith makes him a righteous warrior, and I'm glad we have some muscle for this mission.
Lastly, the note-writer arrived, a fortune teller named Zellara. Her son had been killed by Lamm. Unfortunately, an all-too-common story. The uncommon part is that, through her divination and investigative fortitude, she was able to learn where Lamm's been hiding himself. She brought us together to finally bring him to justice. Again, how could I turn down that offer?
Braecth wisely wanted to corroborate her story, and we sought out the informant Thom Vinegar. Thom confirmed the details well enough. By this time, it was clear that the eyes of Lamm's Lambs were on us, so we couldn't delay and risk Lamm fleeing again. Off to the pier!
Dwsyer: Pruning the rose bushes, I found a card, "I know what Gaedren has done. Meet me." I can't miss out the opportunity to get rid of that creature. On arriving, I'm not surprised to see Ilmax headed to the same place. If anyone wants Lamm gone more than me, it's her. She seems to be keeping an eye on someone -- I can't make out who -- travelling the rooftops. We arrive seemingly moments after a couple of others -- a full rotter and some sort of mixed mongrelman. It's some sort of fancy parlor. After some introductions, a Varisian woman arrives, introducing herself as Zellara. It turns out we all have a grudge against Lamm (who stole her Harrow deck and murdered her son Eryn). She has some info on where to find him, at the docks. Ilmax and Braecth know a guy at the Gill Grill to try to verify the information. Braecth seems like a shapeshifter, never wearing his own skin. Some guy, Tom Vinegar, seems to confirm the info and we head out.
Confronting Gaedren Lamm
Braecth: Lamm is at the old fishery on West Pier 17. In a slum, that's even more slum. He's got an army of kids- "Lamm's Lambs", which if I had a stomach, I'd vomit on that one. I go undercover as one of them, and am unsurprised when I learn that Lamm is a terrible boss. Abusive, violent, cruel. He uses fear as his first weapon, because he's a brain-dead bully.
As assaults go, ours is a bit more improvised than I'd like. We split their forces, which involves splitting ours. But we're effective: Cloudeyes may not have a huge library of spells, but what she has is effective. Dwyser is a monster in combat. Hrrm keeps the party working smoothly. And myself? I lie. I trick. It's what I do, after all.
Lamm falls, in a large part because his "Lambs" aren't loyal to them. In the end, it costs us a fair bit of gold, as they raid the hideout before we can, but it's worth it. Lamm's dead, but he leaves behind some mysteries: a key-shaped clockwork dagger, an expensive brooch, and Zalara's head; she's been dead for weeks.
All this, and we were hired by a ghost. She continues to haunt the Harrow Deck, and promises to help us as much as she can. Fine, grand, I can imagine some ways to use diviners to get my operation back up, better than it was before. But there's a different problem: as we exit the fishery, riots have broken out. The King is dead. Long live the Queen. Shit is well and truly fucked.
Hrrm: Lamm at nasty smelly fish place. Bad smell for bad friend. We meet little ones of Lamm. Bad friends, but they are not bad like Lamm. Though they try to be sneaky thieves, Hrrm knows better.
Braecth again leaves friends. Are we bad friends? Though Braecth and Ilmax already have strong Fungril bond. Hrrm jealous. Oh, maybe Braecth missed Zellara? I hope they stay very good friends.
Other little ones nearby spot us, and must go to Lamm? Hrrm and Ilmax work together to subdue running one. But it isn't enough, the alarm is raised.
Fight happens. Dwyser and Ilmax are very strong friends. Much stronger than Hrrm!
Until nasty friends appear. Hrrm uses pretty white & black Nethys Bracelet curio to call tiny friend with big strength. Tiny friend throws nasty friend into nasty water!
And Hrrm help Braecth attack nasty friend! (Hrrm not know when Braecth returned?) We are good team!
Finally, very bad friend Lamm comes. Hrrm must punish Lamm. Must find Sample.
Friends defeat Lamm. Find stinky box. Inside is Zellara's head, like Sample, but... wrong. Hrrm knows Zellara is not like Sample. Zellara talk only hours ago. Maybe she has strange relic?
After time, we find Sample! Sample unharmed, but quiet... Best moment of day! Hrrm very happy!
Upon leaving stinky fish place, friends discover city in flame and chaos!
Sample suddenly speaks:
The Great Fire of 4429 AR claimed the lives of almost all of the Sable Company marines, most of the Fort's garrison, many of its most prominant citizens, as well as nearly one-quarter of Fort Kovosa's civilian population.
Hrrm think Sample picked bad time for history.
Friends return to Zellara's home. House is wrong; dust everywhere; old; friendless. Zellara was ghost? Ghost haunting Harrow deck? Hrrm think we helped friend Zellara. Hrrm glad.
But now, city on fire. Chaos in streets. "The King is dead" friends mutter. But Hrrm have Sample, and new friends. Will Hrrm be enough for friends?
Ilmax: We found a small troop of Lamm's Lambs outside the dilapidated warehouse on the pier where Lamm was supposedly holed up. His abuse and indoctrination of these kids seems to have been effective at extracting a weak kind of loyalty from them. We weren't able to disperse them. I put one in a deep slumber, a crude kind of temporary salvation, but the alarm had already been sounded. We were soon met with more grown-up adversaries, crawling out of the woodwork. There were a few stumbles, but we succeeded at rousing Lamm from his hiding place and dispatching him and the adults working for him. It's amazing what vengeance does for motivation.
So, Lamm's dead, fed to his own alligator. If there's ever any questions about it, I've gathered enough of his cooked books and letters to present a case. But there won't be questions. No one will mourn him, and he was an inconvenience at best.
I pointedly ignored the Lambs' looting. They deserve what few treasures they can find, though I worry they'll quickly run through whatever they find and have little to show for it, end up in some other dangerous enterprise.
Searching the warehouse, we uncovered some Korvosian Guard handcuffs, an unusual brooch, an ornate dagger, and Zellara's Harrow deck (and her very-dead head.) Apparently, she's been dead for weeks and recruited us in her incorporeal form. She seems bound to the deck somehow and wishes to stay with us, believing she has some unfulfilled purpose before she can pass through the veil. The serial number of the handcuffs is still legible. I wonder if any old "friends" in the Guard can dig up some information on how they fell into Lamm's possession.
And now the city is ablaze, the King is dead, and small riots have broken out. There is no rest for the wicked.
Dwsyer: Obviously he went with a fight. He sent a whole swarm of children after us. Perhaps their souls were damaged and Pharasma will send them back. That is not for me to question. There were some brutes here too. Naturally they had to go too. Cut extra to make sure we got it all. Braecth isn't all glamor and is a fine warrior himself. Ilmax was conservative in showing her ferocity, but it was there. Hrrm looks tough, but those gentle eyes betray that it's all fluff. But those relics of his, they sure gave us great boon during the battle. I wonder how he recharges them?
We let the remaining children take most of the bounty. At least some will be smart enough to use it to begin a path to redemption. We focus on the big things in Lamm's inner sanctum: A hat box with Zellara's head, a fancy brooch, a Harrow deck and the like. Zellara's head? And it doesn't look fresh? Odd.
We work to return to the parlor where we met her. Empty. Dusty. It was an illusion. Zellara was a ghost. It takes a strong will to keep one's soul on Golarion to finish a task. She was a strong woman. But she is now released.
"The king is dead." We hear this through the streets, "Eodred Arabasti II is dead, Queen Ileosa now sits upon the throne." The city is in chaos. Successions never go well when devilry is involved. "The castle seneschal is missing."
