Caizarlu's Basement

Dear Brother,

As we continued to investigate the series of gruesome murders that have occurred around Sandpoint, we made our way to a sanitarium to interview a possible witness named Grayst. Unfortunately, it seemed he had been afflicted by ghoul fever and succumbed to its ravages. After we dispatched with the resulting ghoul, we further explored the sanitarium. We found its operator, Habe, holed up in one of the cells, probably to protect himself from the tieflings he had unwittingly hired and who attacked us as we made our way to the cells.

It seemed Habe was knowledgeable about a tenant that had taken up residence in his basement and was conducting horrifying experiments and creating undead. To my great dismay, as Haneet charged into battle (truly, the fire in her spirit must have come from Torag's great forge,) she fell. While I knew that we would be able to bring her back to life, such a feat falls beyond my own skill.

Although we quickly put a permanent end to the horrors in the basement, we had little time to catch our breath. It appeared that goblins had set fire to the sanitarium, and we rushed to save the inmates and ourselves before the whole building was engulfed.

After reviving Haneet, we got word that farmers outside of Sandpoint were being attacked and slaughtered. We went out to investigate. It seemed that the scarecrows were coming to life and attacking, like in that old Varisian nursery rhyme. As we approached, it appeared that some scarecrows were no longer on their perches. I suppose Tokki thought he was being proactive and testing the waters when he fired an arrow at one of the scarecrows still on its perch, but as the arrow struck its mark, we heard a ghastly scream. It turns out it was one of the farmers strung up there. I was truly disturbed by this gnome's lack of remorse at this terrible accident, but he has since explained that part of his condition is a lack of emotion and has since explained that he was affected by the death and does plan to make amends.

Of course, we didn't have time for all of this introspection in the moment. The barn contained more unspeakable horrors, and Haneet soon found the source in the farmhouse. A ghast and several ghouls had taken up residence. While dealing with them, we were further surrounded by more of the vile undead who did, indeed, look like scarecrows.

I do not know when I will be able to write you again, dear brother, as during our struggle, I was bitten by one of the ghouls and I fear I have contracted ghoul fever. I am confident that, with Torag's strength, I will overcome this sickness, but I am not sure how long my recovery will take.
