In Training

Pauline: We escape Romania by train, headed for Transnistria. Thank goodness we had Joseph around, because I had no idea there was even a country by that name- and technically, there isn't. Some soldiers stop the train at the border, but far from being the "Papers, please" sort, these kids just wanted to drink beer and get pictures taken with Americans.

We had more of the same in Transnistria- a passel of kids tried to mug us. Joseph said something to deeply offend a pilaf vendor. But we mostly made it to the airport without causing an international incident.

Another one, anyway.

Uganda eat that?

Pauline: We catch our plane to Uganda, and the flight is miserable and awful. They're smuggling guns to the local warlords, the airstrip is a dirt field, and everything is terrible. We don't stay long before we catch a plane back to the Caribbean. From there, it's an easy trip to the States.

Exchange

Pauline: We do a little of our own research on the reliquary, but eventually the time comes to return it to Rosa. I throw a rider in there, though- that she must return it to my rightful heir. I think I'm being clever, but she smirks and thanks me for making sure she knows to make sure I have no heirs.

The joke's on her. My son's a lawyer. He can set up an airtight trust to inherit that. I do call him to set that up. His "roommate" answered, and I think it's terribly cute how they think anybody's buying that story.

Where was I?

Would you like Fries with That?

Pauline: The spirit of Essie shows up in my forge again. I talk it over with Father Dowling, and he thinks that the spirit is trying to find a new home- but if it's denied that chance, it might finally be dead. So I come up with a plan to lure it away.

I set up a junkyard forge- brake drum and old vacuum motor, essentially. I do a lot of work on that, while polluting that forge as much as I can. Slowly, I lure the creature into the junkyard forge. Once it's in there, Father Dowling helps me siphon off some of its essence while I work the forge. Eventually, its energy is all gone.

The only down side is that everything I forged during that period is greasy and stained.

Transmission

Pauline: The Feebs still want somebody to look into a drug smuggling ring in Virginia. So we do. It's still summer, so I round up the kids and we bring Joe along and make a big old camping trip out of it. This is probably foolish, but Joe can keep them safe and it's well away from where we're actually operating.

Turns out, they really are running drugs, and we hijack one of their trucks to prove it. We turn the drugs over to the DEA, who wants us to help them raid the house. We do, and we catch the culprits, but we can't find the stash. In an underbasement, though, we do find a ritual space.

The rednecks clam up and refuse to answer, so we start blindly trying the ritual. We know that if we screw it up, something really bad could happen. So do they. And I'm just about ready to screw something up royally…
